Happy Saturday, everyone! I’m slowly getting my studio (aka my office) set up to look halfway decent, so when I share some facts with you, it’s not a total eyesore—well, aside from having to look at my mug and listen to my voice. Today, I’m diving into the supplements I take daily. These are staples I’ve used for years, and I’ll walk you through what they are, why I take them, and how I stay intentional about it. I’ll also touch on the supplements we sell, why I carry them, and why some don’t make my personal cut. Let’s get into it.

The Golden Rule of Supplements: Be Intentional

First things first—supplements are meant to

      supplement

a healthy, whole-food diet, not replace it. I’ll admit, I’m terrible with vegetables, but that doesn’t mean I lean on pills to fix everything. The supplement space is a minefield—it’s easy to get sold on hype and end up spending $500-$700 a month on stuff you’re not even sure works. My approach? Be practical, have a clear reason for each one, and understand the risks and trade-offs. Here’s what I take every day and why.

      1. Multivitamin: My Nutritional Insurance

I take a multivitamin daily—right now, it’s either First Form Microfactor or Pure Encapsulations Men’s Pure Pack. I recently switched to the Pure Pack because, at 40, it’s tailored for men over 40 with extras like prostate health support. But that’s not the main draw for me. What I love is its blend of polyphenols—antioxidants that studies show help metabolize visceral fat (the unhealthy stuff around your organs). I tend to store fat there, so boosting polyphenols has been a focus lately.

The beauty of these packs? One packet a day covers all my bases—vitamin A, C, D, the B vitamins, and a slew of minerals—without needing 37 bottles cluttering my cupboard. The men’s version leans into prostate health, while the women’s supports breast tissue health. Simple, effective, done.

      2. Vitamin D3 + K2: The Sunshine I Don’t Get

Next up, vitamin D3 with K2. My wife, a doctor with 13 years of experience, says she’s rarely seen anyone with sufficient vitamin D levels on blood work—most of us are deficient until proven otherwise. I work indoors all day, and even when I’m outside, I’m not soaking up enough sun (sunscreen doesn’t help). Food sources like fortified milk don’t cut it either.

Vitamin D is crucial for bone health, immunity, mood, muscle function, and preventing chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. My blood work showed I’m on the low end, so between my multivitamin and an extra supplement (Pure Encapsulations Vitamin D3 + K2), I get 5,500 IU daily. The K2 is key—it helps shuttle calcium to your bones, boosting density and supporting cardiovascular health. Don’t skip the K2 combo—it’s a game-changer.

      3. Creatine Monohydrate: My Muscle (and Brain) Booster

Good old creatine monohydrate—5 grams a day, every day. It’s a staple for exercise performance, muscle growth, and recovery, which is huge for me as I prioritize strength over cardio (though I don’t neglect either). As we age, maintaining or building muscle is the single most important training focus, and creatine helps me do that.

Emerging research also shows it supports brain health—memory, reasoning, clarity—and even blood sugar regulation. It’s the most studied supplement out there, safe for nearly everyone (barring rare medical cases), and works for men, women, all ages. I weigh 200 pounds and stick to 5 grams daily. My wife’s on board now too—plant-based eaters might notice even bigger benefits since creatine mostly comes from animal protein. It’s a no-brainer.

      4. Fish Oil: Heart, Brain, and Inflammation Fighter

Fish oil’s another daily must—3 grams from high-quality sources like Pure Encapsulations or First Form. It’s in my multivitamins too, but not enough, so I supplement extra. Studies back its benefits for heart health, brain function, eye health, and reducing inflammation. It’s even shown to aid weight loss

      when paired with lifestyle changes

—not a magic bullet, but it helps with fat breakdown.

Quality matters here. Cheap fish oil from big-box stores is diluted—I’d need eight pills to hit my dose. Stick to reputable brands, or you’re wasting money. I flip between Pure Encapsulations and First Form based on what’s in stock—both are solid.

      5. Whey Protein: Hitting My Protein Goals

I use Transparent Labs whey protein—two scoops daily for 56 grams of protein. It’s not about replacing food; it’s a tool to hit my 200-220 grams of protein a day, which is tough with whole foods alone (I’ve met maybe zero people who can do it consistently). I love the French vanilla and peanut butter chocolate flavors—a little treat in my day.

The protein industry’s shady—cheap “4 pounds for $30” tubs aren’t pure whey. Transparent Labs keeps it clean, and that’s why I sell it. Quality counts, or you’re just buying flavored filler.

      6. Element Electrolytes: Hydration That Works

Hydration’s key, and I use Element—unflavored most days, raspberry when I want flavor. On a clean, unprocessed diet, sodium can run low, especially for a sweaty guy like me. Two packets daily (three if I hit the sauna) keep me feeling sharp. I mix one into my morning water jug and another during my workout. It’s simple and effective.

      7. Fiber: The Unsung Hero

I forgot this one initially—First Form unflavored fiber, 9 grams daily. I don’t eat enough fiber naturally, so I toss it into my oatmeal or smoothie. It’s a quiet MVP for digestion and keeping things running smoothly.

      Occasional Extras

        Stim-Free Pre-Workout (Transparent Labs)

      : Once or twice a week, I sip this for the beta-alanine boost when I’m sluggish. It’s not daily—just a pick-me-up.

        BCAAs (Transparent Labs)

: I go through a jug every three months, mostly when I’m in a calorie deficit. If you hit your protein goals, they’re not essential—more of a flavored-water perk for me. Vegetarians might see more benefit.

      Why I Keep It Simple

Over the years, I’ve cut people’s supplement lists down more often than added to them. I’m not here to push pills unless there’s a clear “why.” Multivitamins are my micronutrient insurance, vitamin D3 and creatine are non-negotiables, and fish oil rounds it out. The rest? Tools for specific goals. No throwing money at the “supplement gods” hoping for miracles.

Hey there, fitness fam! Recently, one of our community members hit me with a great question that I think a lot of you might relate to: “I’ve been working out at 7 a.m., but since starting a calorie deficit to lose weight, I feel sluggish and don’t have the same ‘go’ I used to. Any ideas on how to keep crushing my workouts while sticking to this deficit?”

It’s a fantastic question because it gets to the heart of balancing performance and weight loss—a tricky spot for anyone who loves training hard. Let’s break it down and explore some strategies to keep you feeling strong, even when the calories are dialed back.

The Calorie Deficit Basics: Why You’re Feeling Drained

First things first: a calorie deficit is the only way to lose weight. It’s simple thermodynamics—burn more than you eat, and your body taps into stored energy (like fat) to make up the difference. But here’s the catch: when you’re training hard, especially at high intensity, slashing calories can leave you running on fumes.

Why? Because your body’s fuel preferences shift depending on the workout. High-intensity, anaerobic efforts—like heavy lifting or sprints—rely heavily on glycogen (stored carbs) for quick energy. Fat, while a great fuel source, takes longer to convert into usable energy and shines in lower-intensity, aerobic states. If you’re cutting carbs to hit that deficit and then pushing an anaerobic workout, you might be short-changing your performance.

So, how do we fix this? It starts with how you’re building that calorie deficit.

Protein Stays, Carbs and Fat Play

    Here’s a golden rule:

      protein is non-negotiable

. Whether you’re in a deficit, maintenance, or surplus, your protein intake should stay consistent to preserve muscle mass and support recovery. So, when we talk about cutting calories, we’re playing with the other two macros: carbohydrates and fat.

Why? Carbs are your body’s go-to for intense activity and recovery. They replenish muscle glycogen, kickstart protein synthesis, and keep you ready for the next session. Fat, on the other hand, is a denser energy source (9 calories per gram vs. carbs’ 4), so trimming it can get you to that deficit faster without sacrificing workout juice.

For sedentary folks or low-activity weight loss, I’d flip it—cut carbs, keep fat steady—since their bodies can lean on fat as fuel in an aerobic state. But for lifters and high-intensity lovers? Protect those carbs.

So, how do you make this work? Here are some actionable steps:

      1. Weigh and Measure Your Food

If you’re not losing weight, you’re not in a deficit—period. Most people underestimate how much they eat, so let’s get real with the numbers. Track your food for a few days (it doesn’t have to be perfect) to see your baseline protein, carbs, and fats. For example, if you’re at 200 grams of carbs daily, that’s a solid starting point for most active people. Adjust from there based on your size, muscle mass, and training intensity.

      2. Cut Fat, Not Carbs

Look at your protein sources—swap fatty cuts of meat for leaner ones, ditch the olive oil or butter, and opt for low-fat or non-fat dairy (think milk or yogurt). Fat’s calorie density means small cuts here can add up fast, letting you keep carbs higher for energy and recovery.

      3. Time Your Carbs Around Training

Carbs are for activity, not lounging. On training days, load most of your carbs pre- and post-workout. Post-workout, they’ll replenish glycogen and kick recovery into gear. Pre-workout, they’ll give you the boost to power through. On sedentary days (like a chill weekend), dial them back—unused carbs can turn into stored fat if you’re not burning them.

      4. Experiment with Pre-Workout Fuel

Feeling drained at 7 a.m.? Try a small carb hit before training. Personally, I love a smoothie with blueberries, milk, protein powder, and creatine about two hours before I lift—it’s 20-30 grams of carbs that sit well and keep me going. If that’s not an option (say, you’re rushing to a 5 a.m. session), a fast-digesting carb supplement like First Form’s Ignition works wonders. Start with a quarter scoop (15-20 grams of carbs), pair it with protein, and tweak up until you feel that pre-deficit spark again.

For a natural vibe, honey’s my go-to whole-food carb source—one or two tablespoons digest fast and fuel you up without the heaviness.

      5. Give Your Body Time to Adapt

If you just started this deficit, give it a couple of weeks. Your body’s used to running on plentiful fuel, so it needs time to adjust its energy systems. Be patient, track how you feel, and tweak as you go.

      Finding Your Sweet Spot

Here’s the deal: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. A 200-gram carb day might be perfect for one person but too low for another—it depends on your size, muscle mass, and training volume. An in-body scan can dial in your starting numbers, but even then, it’s a starting point. Run it for 2-6 weeks, see how you perform and recover, and adjust.

For the member who asked this (you know who you are!), I’d suggest aiming for 200 grams of carbs daily, with a big chunk post-workout to kickstart recovery early. Play with pre-workout options—Ignition, honey, or fruit—and see what clicks.

      Final Thoughts

Training hard on a calorie deficit is totally doable, but it takes intention. Keep protein steady, cut fat over carbs, time your fuel around workouts, and listen to your body. If you’re still bonking, it might not just be calories—fitness level plays a role too (but that’s a convo for another day).

Her husband, a fitness nerd in his own right, added, “We talk health and fitness at home all the time—it just made sense to bring this to you guys.” Their synergy is electric, and this podcast was a masterclass in why blood work is your secret weapon for longevity.

      Blood Work: Your Car’s Dashboard

“Blood work is like your car’s dashboard—it tells you when to act before the engine fails.” This metaphor stuck with me. They hammered home a key truth: many chronic conditions—like high cholesterol, insulin resistance, or hypertension—creep up silently. By the time you feel symptoms, the damage might be hard to reverse. But regular labs? They’re your early warning system.

Cassie’s husband shared his own wake-up call: “I didn’t take blood work seriously in my younger years. If I’d waited until 45 or 50 to check my cholesterol or blood sugar, it could’ve been bad.” Cassie nodded, “The younger you are, the more proactive you can be—fixing or preventing things entirely.”

So, what should you test? It depends on your history, but Cassie outlined some basics for a healthy adult with no chronic issues:

Cholesterol got a big spotlight. Cassie’s husband has battled familial hypercholesterolemia—a genetic tendency to high cholesterol—since his 30s. He learned the hard way that coconut oil in his coffee (hello, saturated fat!) sent his “sticky” LDL soaring. Cutting it out, plus meds like ezetimibe, turned things around fast. “Labs let you trial and error without setting yourself too sideways,” he said.

Cassie digs deeper with the NMR lipid profile. Unlike a standard panel, it breaks down LDL into small (bad, sticky) versus large (fluffy, safer) particles and measures ApoB, the protein that carries LDL into your arteries. “I’ve seen patients with mildly elevated LDL—say, 120—where an NMR shows it’s all small LDL and their ApoB is through the roof. Others have high LDL, but it’s all large particles, and their risk is low.” It’s a game-changer for precision.

      Insulin Resistance: The Silent Threat

Insulin resistance stole the show as a sneaky killer. “It can start 10 or 15 years before you notice,” he warned. Cassie agreed, “You don’t feel diabetes until it’s advanced—vision changes, neuropathy. Catching insulin resistance early could prevent it entirely.”

Key labs here? Fasting insulin, triglycerides, and A1C. Her husband’s been on a mission to lower his A1C (currently 5.3) by adding quality carbs and fiber—think chia seeds, oatmeal, lentils. “I was low-carb, and my fasting glucose kept creeping up. Increasing carbs retrained my body to use it.” Cassie chimed in, “Carbs aren’t the enemy—fiber helps with glucose, cholesterol, and gut health. Most Americans get 10 grams a day; aim for 35-45.”

Hormones sparked lively debate. He’s on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) after exhausting lifestyle fixes—sleep, diet, stress management. “My testosterone was in the 200s, and I felt like crap. Providers didn’t care if I was ‘in range.’ We ruled out sleep apnea, pituitary issues—everything.” At 40, post-vasectomy, TRT at a minimal dose (total testosterone ~600) restored his vitality. But he’s clear: “Young guys, don’t jump on it without fixing lifestyle first. It’s a big deal—sterility, atrophy.”

For women, Cassie’s diving into perimenopause and menopause. “It’s complex—cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, all interplay. Symptoms like fatigue or irregular cycles might mean low progesterone or high stress.” She uses blood and salivary tests to check ratios, especially in the luteal phase. “Women need carbs, especially if you train hard. Low-carb can throw hormones off.” Her own journey at 39 fuels her passion here.

Blood Pressure & Kidneys: Silent Killers Too

Blood pressure’s another stealth threat. “I’ve had patients walk in at 200/100 with no symptoms,” Cassie said. “It’s a kidney and heart destroyer.” Check it at home (sit 3-5 minutes first!), but calibrate with your provider—electronic cuffs can read high.

For athletes, kidney labs can trick you. High creatinine from workouts might skew GFR, but Cassie uses cystatin C for clarity. “It’s not affected by exercise. If your creatinine’s up but cystatin C’s normal, you’re likely fine.”

Cassie’s philosophy shines: prioritize lifestyle—diet, exercise, sleep, stress—but don’t fear meds when needed. “If your blood pressure’s 200/100, I’m not waiting weeks for diet to fix it. But if it’s 130/82, we’ve got wiggle room.” Tools like CT calcium scores (checking artery plaques) guide decisions too. “It’s about severity and timeline,” she says.

If you’ve ever hopped on a Concept2 rowing machine, you know it’s no joke. That sleek, unassuming piece of equipment can humble even the fittest among us, especially when it comes to the infamous 2,000-meter row. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or just curious about how you stack up, the 2K row is a gold-standard test of all-around fitness. In this post, we’ll dive into the average 2K times for men and women, then explore why this grueling challenge is one of the best ways to measure your health and grit. Let’s pull into it!

So, what’s a typical 2K time for women on the Concept2? It depends on experience, age, and fitness level, but let’s break it down with some real numbers.

Now that you’ve got the numbers, let’s talk about why the 2K row on a Concept2 is more than just a sweaty time trial—it’s one of the best ways to gauge your overall fitness and health. Here’s what makes it so special.

          1. Total-Body Workout

Rowing hits nearly every muscle you’ve got—legs (60% of the power), core (stability central), and upper body (lats, biceps, traps). Unlike running or cycling, which lean on specific muscle groups, the 2K demands everything, testing your strength and endurance from head to toe.

          2. Cardio Meets Power

At 6-10 minutes for most people, the 2K taxes both your aerobic engine (70-80% of the energy) and anaerobic reserves (that brutal final push). It’s a perfect blend of stamina and intensity, mirroring real-life demands like chasing a bus or powering through a tough day.

          3. Efficiency in Action

The Concept2 spits out watts, showing how effectively you turn effort into motion. Good technique with your legs, core, arms in sync, plus sustained power under fatigue, reveals your fitness efficiency. It’s not just brute strength; it’s smart strength.

          4. Mental Toughness

Ever heard of the “pain cave”? The 2K drags you there better most other tests in my opinion. It’s long enough to hurt but short enough to demand an all-out effort. Pacing it right and pushing past the burn test your mental game as much as your body, which I believe to be a key piece of long-term health.

          5. Measurable and Fair

The Concept2’s monitor tracks time, splits, and watts with precision, letting you compare yourself to others or your past self. It’s low-impact, so anyone can try it, and the 2K distance is a global standard to test all your energy systems and work capacity.

          6. Health Insights

Your 2K time ties to big health markers: a faster row often means better VO2 max (heart-lung fitness), muscle endurance, and even a leaner physique. It’s a snapshot of how well your body, and mind work together.

The 2K isn’t too short (like a 500m sprint) or too long (like a 10K grind). It’s the Goldilocks of fitness tests. It is challenging, balanced, and revealing. That’s why I truly believe to be a great test of total fitness.

Whether you’re a guy aiming for sub-7:30 or a woman targeting sub-8:00, the 2K row is a challenge worth taking. It’s not just about bragging rights. It’s about discovering what your body can do, and pushing it further.

7:30 for Men and 8:15 for women is going to remain the goal for Double Edge Fitness members. If you come up short, talk with your coach, improving this metric will improve every aspect of your fitness and long-term health.

Based on the most current strength and conditioning research available as of February 19, 2025, the debate surrounding squat depth—specifically squatting below parallel (often referred to as “deep squats”) versus squatting only to parallel—has evolved significantly. Research increasingly supports the idea that squatting below parallel, when performed with proper technique, offers notable benefits for knee health and overall physical performance while dispelling many outdated concerns about risks. Below, I’ll break down the benefits and risks of both approaches, focusing on knee health, and highlight the latest findings.

Enhanced Knee Stability and Joint Health

Deep squats involve a greater range of motion (typically beyond 90 degrees of knee flexion), which engages more musculature around the knee, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. Studies indicate that this increased muscle activation improves knee stability by strengthening the surrounding ligaments and tendons. The controlled loading in deep squats stimulates adaptation in these connective tissues, making them more resilient to stress and potentially reducing injury risk over time.

Research shows that compressive forces on the knee increase with depth, but healthy knees can adapt to these forces without damage. Notably, the “wrapping effect”—where the hamstrings and calves make contact at the bottom of a deep squat—helps distribute forces more evenly across the joint, reducing strain on any single structure like the meniscus or patellofemoral joint.

           Reduced Shear Stress on Ligaments

Contrary to earlier assumptions, deep squats do not increase shear stress on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). In fact, studies demonstrate that shear forces decrease as knee flexion exceeds 90 degrees because the hamstrings co-contract with the quadriceps, stabilizing the tibia and minimizing tibial translation. This suggests that deep squats may protect the knee ligaments rather than harm them.

           Improved Physical Performance

Deep squats have been shown to produce superior gains in strength, power, and athletic performance compared to partial or parallel squats. Research highlights greater improvements in vertical jump height, sprint speed, and maximum strength (e.g., 1RM) when training includes squats below parallel. This is attributed to the fuller range of motion, which maximizes muscle fiber recruitment and time under tension, particularly in the glutes and hamstrings.

           Potential Protective Effect Against Degeneration

Long-term studies of weightlifters and powerlifters—who regularly squat below parallel with heavy loads (up to 6 times body weight)—show no increased incidence of knee cartilage wear or osteoarthritis compared to non-lifters. This challenges the notion that deep squats are inherently degenerative and suggests that joints adapt to progressive loading when technique is sound.

          Risks of Squatting Below Parallel

           Technique Dependency

The benefits of deep squats hinge on proper form. Poor mechanics—such as excessive forward lean, knee valgus (knees caving in), or loss of spinal neutrality—can increase stress on the knees, hips, or lower back. For individuals with limited mobility (e.g., stiff ankles or hips), achieving depth without compensations can be challenging, potentially elevating injury risk if forced.

For those with existing knee issues (e.g., meniscal tears, patellar tendinopathy, or patellofemoral pain), deep squats might exacerbate symptoms due to higher compressive loads. However, this is not a universal risk; it’s individual-specific and often manageable with modified depth or rehab-focused approaches.

Excessive depth (beyond 130 degrees of knee flexion) can increase hip joint forces, potentially leading to impingement or discomfort in those with hip pathology. Additionally, if mobility limitations cause “buttwink” (posterior pelvic tilt at the bottom), the lumbar spine may flex under load, posing a risk to spinal health rather than the knees.

           Lower Compressive Forces

Squatting to parallel (around 90–100 degrees of knee flexion) involves less knee flexion, resulting in lower peak compressive forces on the knee compared to deeper squats. This might feel more comfortable for beginners or those with minor knee discomfort, though it doesn’t inherently “protect” the knee more than deep squats.

           Sport-Specific Relevance

For athletes whose sports don’t require deep knee flexion (e.g., speed skaters or certain field sport positions), parallel squats may suffice to build strength at relevant joint angles without the need for greater depth. This specificity can optimize training efficiency.

Risks of Squatting Only to Parallel

           Incomplete Muscle Development

Parallel squats engage fewer muscle fibers, particularly in the posterior chain (glutes and hamstrings), compared to deep squats. This can lead to imbalanced strength around the knee, potentially increasing vulnerability to injury during dynamic movements that demand full-range control (e.g., landing from a jump).

           Higher Shear Forces

Research indicates that shear forces on the knee ligaments peak around 90 degrees of flexion and decrease beyond that. Stopping at parallel may thus expose the ACL and PCL to greater stress than descending further, contradicting the old belief that partial squats are “safer” for ligaments.

           Limited Functional Carryover

Everyday activities (e.g., sitting, standing) and many sports require strength beyond parallel. Limiting squat depth may leave individuals less prepared for these demands, potentially increasing injury risk outside the gym due to weaker deep-range strength and stability.

           Potential for Overloading

Because parallel squats allow heavier loads (due to the shorter range of motion), lifters might inadvertently overload the knee with supra-maximal weights. Studies suggest this can concentrate forces more locally on knee structures, increasing long-term degenerative risk compared to lighter, full-depth squats.

           Knee Health

: The latest research largely debunks the myth that deep squats harm healthy knees. When executed correctly, they enhance joint stability, strengthen supportive tissues, and distribute forces more favorably than parallel squats. Parallel squats, while not inherently “bad,” may leave the knee less robust due to reduced muscle activation and higher shear forces at 90 degrees.

           Performance

: Deep squats consistently outperform parallel squats for strength, power, and hypertrophy, making them a preferred choice for athletes and fitness enthusiasts aiming to maximize gains.

           Risk Mitigation

: Both depths carry risks if the technique falters, but deep squats demand greater mobility and control, which can be a barrier for some. Parallel squats might feel “safer” for novices but don’t inherently reduce overall stress on the body—shifting it to the hips and back instead.

          Practical Takeaways

           For Healthy Individuals

: Squatting below parallel is not only safe but advantageous for knee health and performance, provided mobility and technique are adequate. Start with bodyweight deep squats, progress gradually, and prioritize form (e.g., knees tracking over toes, neutral spine).

           For Rehabilitation or Limitations

: If knee pain or mobility issues exist, parallel squats can serve as a starting point, with depth increased as strength and range improve. Consult a professional to tailor the approach.

           Training Goals

: Match depth to purpose—deep squats for maximal strength and resilience, parallel for sport-specific joint angles or temporary load management.

In summary, current evidence tilts heavily in favor of squatting below parallel for most people, portraying it as a “friend” to the knee rather than a foe. Parallel squats aren’t obsolete, but their perceived safety edge is overstated, and they may fall short in delivering the comprehensive benefits of deeper squatting. Always individualize based on capability and context, but don’t shy away from depth out of unfounded fear.

          1. What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

DPC is a healthcare model where patients pay a flat monthly membership fee for unlimited access to their primary care provider, without the restrictions or complications of insurance-based care.

          2. Does DPC replace health insurance?

No, DPC is not a replacement for insurance. It is recommended to maintain a high-deductible health plan for emergencies or specialized care outside of primary care.

          3. Can I still use my health insurance if I see a DPC Provider?

Yes, I will not bill or collect from any insurance company, but outpatient labs, imaging, urgent care and hospital services may all be covered by your insurance.

          4. What if I have a Medicare, Medicaid or HMO plan?

I can see medicare patients, but only after I’ve opted out of medicare as a provider and the patient will need to sign a waiver declaring that neither you nor your provider will directly bill Medicare for services provided. Medicare should still cover labs, imaging, medications, referrals once this is completed.

Medicaid and HMO plans tend to be very strict about seeing Medicaid and HMO providers only. I cannot write labs, imaging, referrals, or medications for these plans typically, unless I’m a contracted provider through the insurance. You may want to contact your insurance if you do not know if you have a PPO or a HMO plan and what your options are for selecting a primary care provider.

          5. What does the membership fee cover?

The fee covers unlimited visits, extended appointment times, direct communication with your provider, and many in-office services, including procedures.

          6. Can I still see specialists if needed?

Yes, there will be coordinated referrals to trusted specialists and work closely with them to ensure your care is seamless and comprehensive.

          7. What ages will you see?

          8. What if I decide to cancel my membership?

I understand needs may change, and I want to help you through whatever transition you are making. The membership is month to month. If you need to cancel, please provide written notice 30 days in advance.

          9. Will you have non-membership options

Yes. I understand the month to month membership may not fit all needs. Some individuals would like to be seen once a year for an annual. Non-member agreements do not include multiple visits, telehealth, phone services, medication refills, ongoing chronic disease management. Acute visits may be available, depending on the schedule. Members of course get priority.

I have called the Reno area home for 20 years. I grew up on a small farm in Helena, Montana, and moved to Reno in 2004 to attend the University of Nevada, Reno, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in 2009. In 2012, I completed my Master’s of Physician Assistant Studies at Touro University in Henderson, Nevada.

After graduation, I began my career in Primary Care and Internal Medicine, spending seven years in Internal Medicine before transitioning to Family Medicine. With 12 years of experience in Primary Care, I am passionate about providing compassionate and personalized care to every patient I see. I also focus on preventive medicine, aiming to educate and empower patients to take charge of their health. My goal is to prevent or reverse disease whenever possible, moving beyond reactive care to a proactive approach that supports each patient’s best quality of life.

In my practice, I strive to help patients achieve happiness, well-being, physical function, and a life free from debilitating conditions as they age. Direct Primary Care allows me to maintain a meaningful provider-patient relationship without the interference of middlemen. By keeping my patient panel small, I can ensure quality care, dedicated time with each patient, and ready access to medical services.

As a Physician Assistant, I work under a supervising physician to ensure quality healthcare is maintained. Dr. Robbie Grant and I share a professional and respectful relationship rooted in mutual trust and a shared dedication to patient-centered care. As the supervising physician, Dr. Grant provides oversight, mentorship, and clinical guidance to ensure the highest standards of care are delivered. I value Dr. Grant’s expertise and collaborative input.

Dr. Grant helps oversee the clinic’s operations, ensuring a smooth workflow and adherence to medical protocols. Together, we create an environment where teamwork thrives, patient care is prioritized, and open communication is the foundation of our partnership.

When it comes to transforming your body—whether you’re aiming to lose fat, gain muscle, or both—one nutrient reigns supreme: protein. Often dubbed the “building block of life,” protein plays a central role in almost every process in the body, from muscle repair to metabolic function. Yet, its importance is sometimes misunderstood, particularly in the context of differing fitness goals.

Let’s dive into why optimal protein intake should be a constant, regardless of whether you’re trying to shed body fat or pack on lean muscle mass.

      1. Protein and Fat Loss

Protein isn’t just for bodybuilders or gym enthusiasts; it’s also one of the most effective nutrients for fat loss. Here’s why:

        Increased Satiety

: Protein is highly satiating, meaning it helps you feel fuller for longer. This can reduce overall calorie consumption, making it easier to maintain a calorie deficit—the cornerstone of fat loss.

        Preserving Lean Muscle Mass

: During a calorie deficit, your body can break down muscle tissue for energy. Adequate protein intake helps protect your lean muscle mass, ensuring the majority of weight loss comes from fat, not muscle.

        Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)

: Protein has a higher thermic effect than carbohydrates or fats, meaning your body burns more calories digesting and metabolizing it. This provides a small but meaningful boost to your overall calorie expenditure.

For those focusing on fat loss, protein acts as a metabolic safeguard, helping you maintain the muscle mass that supports a healthy metabolism while reducing hunger cravings that can derail your progress.

      2. Protein and Muscle Gain

Building muscle requires more than just lifting heavy weights; it demands a robust supply of protein to repair and grow muscle tissue. Here’s why protein is indispensable for muscle gain:

        Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS)

: This is the process by which your body repairs and builds muscle tissue. Protein provides the amino acids needed for MPS, making it the cornerstone of muscle development.

        Recovery and Performance

: Protein aids in the repair of muscle fibers damaged during workouts, reducing recovery time and enabling you to train harder and more frequently.

        Caloric Surplus Support

: While gaining muscle often involves eating in a caloric surplus, consuming adequate protein ensures the extra calories are used to build lean tissue rather than being stored as fat.

Without enough protein, even the most effective training program will fall short, as your body simply won’t have the raw materials needed to grow.

      3. Why Protein is a Constant for Both Goals

Although losing fat and gaining muscle might seem like opposing goals, protein’s role is remarkably similar in both cases:

        Body Composition Management

: Protein supports the preservation or addition of lean muscle, a critical component of an ideal body composition. More muscle means a higher resting metabolic rate, which aids in both fat loss and muscle gain.

        Consistency in Daily Requirements

: Regardless of your goal, your body’s need for protein remains constant to maintain its vital functions. Protein’s benefits don’t diminish when you shift your focus from fat loss to muscle gain or vice versa.

        Flexibility for Dual Goals

: Many people aim to lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously, a process known as body recomposition. Protein is indispensable here, as it fuels muscle repair while curbing the muscle loss often associated with fat loss.

How Much Protein Do You Need?

While individual needs vary, a general guideline is to consume

0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day

    . For example:

A 150-pound person should aim for 105-150 grams of protein daily.

Factors such as age, activity level, and overall health can influence your protein requirements, so consulting a coach or nutrition professional is always a good idea.

Whether you’re chasing a leaner physique, striving to add muscle, or navigating the delicate balance of body recomposition, protein is your best ally. Its role in maintaining and enhancing your body’s composition makes it an indispensable constant in any health and fitness journey.

is more than just lifting heavier or running faster it’s about becoming healthier, stronger, and more capable in all aspects of life. As we look toward 2025, we are setting an ambitious yet achievable goal to inspire, challenge, and unite our amazing community:

By the end of 2025, we aim to collectively lose 1,000 pounds of fat and gain 300 pounds of muscle as a gym.

This isn’t just about numbers on a scale it’s about transforming body composition to optimize metabolic health, improve longevity, and achieve excellence.

      Why This Goal Matters

Body composition—the ratio of lean muscle to body fat—is one of the most important indicators of overall health. Here’s why:

        Healthy Fat Levels:

Maintaining a lower percentage of body fat, especially visceral fat, reduces the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation.

        More Muscle, More Health:

Increasing lean muscle mass supports a higher resting metabolic rate, improves insulin sensitivity, and enhances physical performance.

The start of a new year brings fresh motivation, big dreams, and the all-too-common resolutions to “get fit” or “start eating healthy.” However, statistics reveal a harsh truth:

80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February

At Double Edge Fitness, we know how challenging it can be to stay committed, but we also know it’s possible to beat the odds. With the right mindset, tools, and support, you can turn your resolutions into lifelong habits.

          Why Most Resolutions Fail

           Unrealistic Goals

: Setting overly ambitious or vague goals can lead to burnout or frustration.

           Lack of Accountability

: Without someone or something to keep you on track, it’s easy to give up.

           All-or-Nothing Mindset

: One bad day or missed workout can derail progress.

           No Plan in Place

: Without a clear, actionable plan, resolutions are just wishes.

          Tips to Avoid Resolution Burnout

Here are practical steps to ensure this year’s resolutions don’t fall by the wayside:

          1. Set SMART Goals

Make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example:

Instead of “I want to get fit,” try “I will attend 3 gym classes per week for 6 months.”

          2. Start Small

Rather than overhauling your entire lifestyle overnight, focus on one habit at a time. For example:

Begin with two workouts per week and gradually increase.

Swap out one unhealthy meal for a nutritious alternative each day.

          3. Find Your “Why”

Identify your deeper motivation. Whether it’s improving energy, being a role model for your kids, or preventing health issues, knowing your “why” keeps you focused when motivation wanes.

          4. Build Accountability

Partner with a friend to tackle fitness goals together.

Join a community like Double Edge Fitness, where coaches and peers will hold you accountable.

          5. Celebrate Small Wins

Recognize and reward your progress along the way. Celebrate milestones, like hitting your first month of consistent workouts or losing a few pounds.

In today’s world, maintaining optimal health isn’t always as straightforward as eating a balanced diet. Even the most health-conscious among us can fall short in meeting all of our nutritional needs due to factors like food quality, soil depletion, and busy lifestyles. That’s where a high-quality multivitamin can make a world of difference. A well-formulated multivitamin bridges the gaps in your nutrition, supports your overall health, and helps you perform at your best every day.

          Why a Multivitamin Matters

A multivitamin is more than just an insurance policy for your nutrition. It plays a critical role in:

           Supporting Energy Levels:

Micronutrients like B vitamins, magnesium, and iron are essential for energy production.

           Boosting Immunity:

Vitamins C, D, and zinc strengthen your immune response.

           Filling Nutritional Gaps:

Modern farming practices and processed foods often strip nutrients from our diets.

           Promoting Longevity:

Antioxidants such as selenium and vitamin E combat oxidative stress, reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

Why I Choose Micro Factor from 1st Phorm

Micro Factor is my go-to daily multivitamin for its comprehensive and convenient formulation. Here’s why:

The pack supports energy, immune function, digestion, and overall health in a way that feels tailored to active lifestyles.

How to Choose the Right Multivitamin for You

When choosing a multivitamin, look for these key features:

           Third-Party Testing:

Ensure the product has been independently tested for quality and potency.

           Bioavailability:

Nutrients should be in forms your body can easily absorb and utilize.

           Comprehensive Formula:

Look for a multivitamin that covers a broad range of vitamins, minerals, and additional health-supporting compounds.

           Brand Reputation:

Trust brands that prioritize research, transparency, and ingredient quality.

          Final Thoughts

Adding a high-quality multivitamin to your daily routine can be a game-changer for your health. Whether you choose the all-in-one convenience of 1st Phorm’s Micro Factor or the tailored precision of Pure Encapsulations’ gender-specific packs, investing in your micronutrient health is a step toward a stronger, more vibrant you.

Remember, supplements should complement a healthy diet and lifestyle, not replace them. Combine your multivitamin with balanced meals, regular exercise, and good sleep to maximize its benefits, and yes these are all available at both Double Edge Fitness locations.

Here’s to your health and longevity!
